Club's First National Medal - Monday October 22nd 2007

Andrew Cumberlidge

16-year-old Tynedale Amateur Swimming Club sprinter Andrew Cumberlidge has won the club's first national medal. After a season plagued by injury he qualified for the 50m and 100m freestyle events. The 100m produced a time slightly under his best but in the 50m he excelled, producing a personal best time of 24.61 seconds and then shaving another tenth of a second off to come in third at 24.51 seconds, only 0.46 seconds behind the gold...

National Swimming Championships - Monday 30th July 2007

The ASA National Age Group Swimming Championships were held at Ponds Forge Sheffield from the 23rd to 26th July. Tynedale had one swimmer, Leigh Thompson 11, who qualified in six events.

Day 1 saw her swim a personal best time in the 100m Backstroke of 1.15.25 to finish 14th and also a best time in the 200m Freestyle [2.21.81]to miss out on the final by 0.2 of a second. On day 2 she competed in the 800m freestyle for which there was no final and Leigh pulled out another best time by 6 seconds to finish a well deserved 9th in 10.16.81.

Day 3 saw Leigh make her first ever national final when she qualified in the 400 freestyle even though the heat swim was 6 seconds outside her best. Undeterred Leigh swam a brilliant first 200m leading to the 150m mark when she was gradually clawed back in and finally finished 7th with a best time of 4.53.75. Day 4 was probably Leigh's best chance of a medal in the 100m freestyle however she misjudged the heat swim and qualified in 10th place and had to compete in the final from lane 10 which left her a difficult task out of the main body of contenders, however she managed to finish 6th [1.05.01] just outside her PB.

Unexpectedly she also made the final of the 200m individual medley swim with a fantastic swim in the heat, taking 2 seconds off her best time. In the final she led a strong field through the Fly and Back improving on her heat splits. She then struggled to hold the Breaststroke which is her weakest and finally finished 5th with a another two second PB. Altogether a brilliant championship for Leigh and having gained vital experience of such a high level championship she has a great future.

Tynedale win Junior League in First Season - Thursday 21st June 2007

The Junior league final took place on Sunday 17th June. Tynedale had qualified in 6th place, but with a full team turn out the coach was confident they could get a third place finish.

The day started with a team parade and thanks to the hard work of parents our swimmers were adorned in green and black, and took the prize for the best turned out team. All our swimmers swam exceptionally well and justified their place in the team, and with good spirit those who didn't get a final's swim came to support.

By 2/3rds the way through Tynedale sensationally had the narrowest of leads. It was all down to the last few events where previously we had been the weakest. After a long wait while the results were checked and double checked, Tynedale were declared the winners by 4 points and secured a place in Division 2 next season.

Competing teams were Ponteland 2nd Gateshead & Whickham 3rd Peterlee 4th Consett 5th South Tyneside 6th.

Brilliant!! Monday 26th March 2007

Tynedale swimmers performed exceptionally well in the 2nd round of the Diddy League today Sat 24th. Finishing one place higher than round 1 in 4th place, but scoring an extra 21 points. Only 15 points separated 1st and 4th place which means it is not unreasonable to expect an even higher place finish in the third round, sealing our place in the final. Which for our first year would be a great achievement. There were wins by Leigh Thompson, in Fly and Breast, David Cumberlidge in Backstroke, Ruth Henderson in Breaststroke and Fly, Tom Hickling in Breaststroke, Rebecca Watson in Backstroke and wins in the 12 and under girls freestyle and medley relays, and the 11 year boys medley relay. Again the younger swimmers with round 1 under their belt looked confident and continued to improve. Next round Sat 28th April at Tynemouth 9.15am warm up.

Team Tynedale - Congratulations to all Diddy League Swimmers Sunday 25th March 2007

Well done to all those who swam in our first Diddy League competition on Sunday at Bishop Auckland.

There were some fantastic swims, especially from the younger swimmers who have never competed before. We were up against some pretty tough competition and my policy for this first round was to give everyone at least two swims. I know some of the youngest swimmers especially Alex and Jenner had a lot more. I was more than pleased we finished 5th. I would hope that we can make the final, as there are 8 teams in division 3 we need to beat 2 of them.

In the next round my aim is to strengthen the team by swimming people on their best strokes. This may mean that some swimmers will only get one swim. However this is a team event and every single swim is important, one swim in a relay is as important as an individual event.

Think about it if you made the Olympics as a member of a relay team you wouldn't not go because you only had one swim would you!!

I will be selecting the team Tues evening , please check the board . Coach leaves 8 am Saturday morning.
